Is your patio too hot? Retractable patio awnings and canopies can be a solution for your patio needs. You may choose from inexpensive partial sun blockers, DIY shading solutions, awnings, and large canopies.
Retractable canopies and awnings are your best bet for your patio, because of the following reasons:
Retractable Awnings
The best thing about retractable patio awnings is that you have a choice of either shade or sunshine.
Retractable awnings usually come with a metal frame mounted on the side of the house covered with shade fabric. Some larger models have diagonal arm supports, while smaller ones eliminate the obstruction with hidden lateral supports. You can conveniently retract and open the patio awning with either a motorised system or a hand crank.
Advantages
- They are easy to roll up when not in use and provide instant shade when needed
- No storage hassles – you do not have to take them down
- No need for building a permanent structure on your patio
- Easy to attach vertical screens to block a late afternoon low sky sun
Disadvantages
- They do not completely cover the patio as most extend for only about 10 feet
- If you leave the opening framework open, there is a risk of damage in high winds
Installation
It is not advisable to install the retractable patio awnings if you do not know what you are doing. However, a homeowner with basic carpentry proficiency can do the job if they get assistance in moving the awnings, which are usually very heavy. Any type of siding can accommodate an awning. Given the weight of the canopy, it is critical to mount the brackets to framing members.
Retractable Canopies
If you are going for maximum versatility, you need to install retractable canopies.
The versatility of canopy systems comes from the fact that they can be open wholly or partially closed. They also blend in well with the existing patio since they can be installed on wood framing.
Retractable canopies are big shading structures built over the patio and mounted to the decking and siding of the house. The shading fabric closes and opens along overhead tracks. It enables you to retract each canopy individually.
Advantages
- They cover almost any size of patio as they have structure nearly 27 ft. wide and up to 21 ft. long
- It gives you more control with the shade, as the only system that enables partial retraction, in addition to independent retraction.
- Come with over 40 fabric colours that will make certain that you will find something that matches your home décor
- You can increase privacy and block out the low sky sun by attaching vertical blinds on the overhead framework
Disadvantage
- While the canopy may match your existing patio décor, the support posts may be inconsistent with it, in addition to being obstructions.
Installation
While they are prefabricated, they are not very easy to DIY. Before you order your parts, you need to get accurate measurements of the brackets for mounting on the siding which is not easy to do as a novice. However, If you have some elementary carpentry skills, you should be able to install retractable canopies easily. If not, check the manufacturer website for recommendations on professional installers.
